ICYMI: Bloomberg Government Unveils New Research on Independent Work in Partnership With DSA

May 26, 2016

On May 26, the Direct Selling Association (DSA) was pleased to lend support to a Bloomberg Government breakfast for policymakers called The Workforce of the Future.  This major Washington, D.C. thought leadership event explored the growing trend of working independently from the perspectives of policymakers, academics and individuals who are in positions that allow them to empower members of independent workforces.

The highlight of the morning was the release of original research commissioned by DSA that sought to determine who independent workers are and what motivates them to work independently.  Academic experts, including Susan Duffy, Executive Director, Center for Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership at Babson College, joined a panel of four to consider the implications of a growing independent workforce.  As for the survey itself, the key findings were:

1. The average length of time working as an independent contractor is 7.2 years.
2. The top industries for independent contractors are construction, technology, education and manufacturing.
3. 9 out of 10 independent contractors have worked as a wage-earning employee.

“One of the reasons direct sellers stay longer than many other industries is because of the relationship aspect…We are a relationship business at the core."

- Traci Lynn, Founder and CEO of Traci Lynn Jewlery

Traci Lynn, Founder and CEO of DSA Member Traci Lynn Jewelry, added additional insight into the mind of independent workers by sharing personal experiences gained through her years of mentorship and training of independent direct selling consultants.  She was joined for the discussion by Niki Christoff, Director of Public Policy, Federal Affairs and Communications, Uber.

The breakfast kicked off with a Bloomberg newsmaker interview with U.S. Representative Steve Chabot (R-OH) who offered firsthand perspective on how policymakers are beginning to examine issues related to independent work.
